Had a seat on the NY Stock exchange, two different times, right after the Civil War and in 1877. Owned a newspaper the Daily Argus (founded 1876) and a hat factory, and two farms, all in Middletown. Transferred the newspaper business to his son Cornelius in 1896. Elected President of First National Bank in 1891, probably continuing to death. Senior Warden of Grace Church in Middletown NY.

When he sold his seat his was for the highest price yet known.

Two farms were called High Barney and Mount Hope.

Was only four when his father died.

Had a profitable publishing business in new Orleans which was stopped by the Civil War.

Six children died young, Arthur, Sarah, Ruth, Susan Rebecca, Christobel.

Large oil portraits of him iand Esther are in the possession of Nathan and Sandra Chitty. They were acquired by Betty Chittywho sent $50 with the request to have “something from the house on Highland Ave.” She was told “some pictures” would be sent. Other pieces from Middletown also throughout family.

• Education: New York Public Schools.


Cornelius married Esther CRAWFORD, daughter of Oliver CRAWFORD and Penelope BENNETT, on 3 Oct 1860. (Esther CRAWFORD was born on 6 Mar 1838.)
