General Notes:
She grew up in Indian territory in Oklahoma, remembered riding horses across the prairie. Two sets of beaded moccasins survived into the 1960s, one set is now in the possession of Em Chitty.
Family was concerned when she attracted the attention of 14 years older Arthur Chitty (she was 24).
Musically inclined, lovely voice. Played piano. Was the first member of her family to go to college (FSCW Tallahassee).
When she was pregnant with Gertrude she already knew about cancer and was advised to have an abortion (for her health) but she absolutely refused. She had a one-side mastectomy around the time of Gertrude's birth.
Died at age 42 of breast cancer. Last days were spent in the care of her uncle Dr. R.N.H. Harsh, who did not believe in morphine and sedatives. Her death was very miserable and painful. Her youngest child Gertrude was 15 months old. At that time cancer was taboo topic.
Very devoted and competent mother. Drove Arthur to all his Merit Badge appointments for Boy Scouts (husband rarely drove a car).
Remained very close to her mother and father, always close until they died. "Typical 19th century wife and mother." (ABC Jr.)
She was always friendly towards her in-laws. Arthur Sr. considered the Browns as being very pleasant but unambitious, not caring about money. "A Chitty could make $1,000 while a Brown was still saying hello."
Noted events in her life were:
• Occupation: High school teacher at Duval High School.
• Education: 2 years at FSCW in Tallahassee.
• Religion: Disciples Of Christ, Riverside Christian Church.
Hazel married Arthur Benjamin CHITTY Sr., son of Edward Irvin Cooper CHITTY and Mary Ann COOPER, on 18 Sep 1912 in Jacksonville, FL. (Arthur Benjamin CHITTY Sr. was born on 31 Jan 1875 in Micanopy, FL and died in 1962 in Jacksonville, FL.)
