Moved to Barn about the time her daughter Jane died. Died wealthy when land bought by husband Whiting appreciated. They owned a whole block along Bayou Texar, as beautiful a property as exists in Pensacola. She moved into the barn during or right before the war, and lived there the rest of her life.

Very independent. Good naturalist. Great rifle marksmanship and fishing skills. Mending her own roof in her 80s. Buried in her jeans and work shirt.

Wild garden the paths of which were all lined with blue Milk of Magnesia bottle half buried. John Chitty remebers playing there like a giant maze.

Named for Emma Penick who was a school friend of Molly Gingles Turner in North Carolina. This was the beginning of the "Em" name in the family.
