The first to bear the name in America, first mentioned in the early records of Plymouth colony as one of the three who built houses on land in Scituate, which was the earliest township or congregation to separate from Plymouth. He is supposed to have been there in 1626, and may have come over with Hatherly in 1623. Goodwin, in his history, speaks of the three earliest settlers of Scituate as Nathaniel Tilden, Henry Merritt and Thomas Byrd. Bayliss in his Historical memoirs, speaks of the same three.
