General Notes:
Served in Civil War as a corporal/clerk, Co, H 17th Reg., S.C. Infantry Volunteers. Last battle was in Petersburg. Wounded seven times. Carried to his death a bullet lodged near the spine.
Kind, gentle man according to ABC.
He was known as Cooper, and his business as E.C. Cooper & Sons.
Four of his brothers were killed in the Civil War. He was the youngest of 13 children, 10 of whom became adults.
His wife Mary Ann is thought to be a cousin, but ABC Sr. and Buice said they were not. Her maiden name was Cooper and she was from the same area.
Left Denmark SC in spring 1878 with a wagon, mule and $1,000. Couldn't buy land in Banberg County because there were tax liens against almost all of it. They went to Augusta, then down river to Savannah. Then they went to Archer, FL on the old Florida Rail & Navigation railroad which went from Fernandina to Cedar Key. Uncle Martin had been in Florida since before the Civil War. They bought 60 acres for $5 an acre and "lived at home" which meant "produced what they needed." (Told by Carroll Mobley, second cousin of A.B. Chitty Sr.
Arthur Jr. knew them as "Paepae" and "Maemae"
