General Notes:
Became the manager of a grocery store near "The Lick" near Gallatin, where a famous frontiersman spent the winter of 1787 living in a hollow tree. This was remembered by all the children.
Perpetually poor health.
Once ran for county clerk against another man named Brown who defeated him by a few votes.
Family lived in a two-story house across a swinging bridge across from an impressive two story log hotel owned by the Winchester and Bates families. Hotel still stands in 1992.
Close friend of Joel Cheek, who sold "Cheek-Nea"l coffee to Maxwell House Hotel, later sold to General Foods for $40M. Joel would visit whenever he came to jacksonville to see his son Leon Cheek.
Called Nudahunga "Boss" by Ponca Indians. He was too kind-hearted to handle the credit. His other Indian nickname was "Red Whiskers."
An excellent picture of the family exists, taken about 1902 in Oklahoma.
