General Notes:
His father died when he was about a year old (1864, Cincinnati).
Was in NY volunteers called up in Spanish American war, went to west coast and then to Honolulu. Was not in action. Company was decimated with malaria. Went from staff sergeant to commission as lieutenant. Stayed in volunteers in NY.
Moved to Pensacola in late 1920s to work with his son EPN Sr. who was managing John A. Merritt’s cotton processing company. Also collected pension as war veteran. Cotton gradually declined int he region ending the business about the time of the Depression, ca. 1929-30.
“Epitome of Santa Claus” (EPN Jr.). Raised chickens, kumquats. Fat and jolly. Well-read, particularly about the theatre. Had worked in Middletown in a haberdashery and also was a reporter for the Middletown Argus.
